Cooking with Preston – Evangers Doggie Sushi

Evangers Doggie Sushi
Written by Rachel Phelps

Has anyone else been binge-watching cooking challenge shows during the pandemic? I have been watching a lot of them with my human ‘rents like “Nailed it”, “Zumbo’s Just Desserts,” and “Crazy Delicious”. These shows have inspired me to make some creative doggie treats. So today, in my very own “Nailed it – Doggie edition”, I am going to make Doggie sushi!

You are probably wondering why sushi … and I say why not? Last month, I totally stole a piece sushi from mom’s plate when she wasn’t looking (we have been doing curbside pick up a couple of times a week to support our local restaurants) and it was so delicious! It was so worth getting in trouble for that yummy piece of sushi goodness. This made me realize that we dogs are missing out on a whole world of rolled up pieces of meat … hehehe.

Mom explained to me that we first had to make sure all the ingredients are doggie safe since there are some humans foods that are dangerous for dogs. To make sure we were completely safe, I decided to make the doggie sushi out of dog food. I reached out to my pals at Evanger’s dog food and they helped me pick out an assortment of flavors to create my sushi masterpiece. I also went out on Amazon and ordered a pack of seaweed sheets to wrap the sushi. Don’t worry, I did my research, and seaweed is ok for us dogs to eat.

One tool I found that was a huge help was a sushi roll maker. You can make these treats without the maker, but this handy tool made it so much easier to create a round roll that stayed together.

  1. Sardines Pup-a-licious SushiUsing the Sushi Roll maker, fill up ⅔ of each side with Lamb and Rice Dinner loaf. This food will act like the sticky rice that is in a human sushi roll.
  2. Sardines Pup-a-licious SushiOn one side, spoon out some Sweet Potato (this is the vegetable).
  3. Sardines Pup-a-licious SushiSardines Pup-a-licious SushiOn the other side, put several pieces of the sardine chunks (this is your sushi meat).
  4. Close the sushi maker.
  5. Layout your seaweed paper and carefully push your doggie sushi out of the sushi maker and onto the top part of the seaweed paper.
  6. Sardines Pup-a-licious SushiRoll the seaweed paper around the food. If the paper does not want to stick, put a little bit of water on the ends of the paper. You can also add toothpicks to help it keep its shape.
  7. Put the roll in your freezer for about 15 to 20 minutes before you slice it. This will help the roll keep its shape when cutting it.
  8. Cut the roll to your desired thickness and enjoy it.

I admit I felt like one of the contestants on a cooking show wondering if my sushi creation would end up looking anything like what I wanted it to.  Also, would it taste good, and how would I plate it to make it look all fancy.  Luckily, when I taste-tested many of the pieces it was very yummy.  Not to gloat or anything, but I think “I nailed it!”  Hehehe.

Now it is your turn to make your own Sushi roll creation!   Evangers has eighty plus varieties of canned dog food and they have no soy, no corn, no wheat, no preservatives, no artificial ingredients, and no animal by-products.  So, based on my calculations, that is over 88,000 different combinations.  I guess I better get back into the kitchen and start sushi rolling!
