Doglympics in Orlando, FL

Written by Rachel Phelps

While I was in Orlando, FL for Global Pet Expo, I decided I needed to immerse myself with the dog locals and see what Florida dogs do on the weekends.  My pals at Dogtipper.com “tipped” me off to a fun pet festival called the Doglympics being held the Saturday after Global was over.  I asked Mom, “Can we go please, please, please?”, and she agreed.  So off we went to Doglympics!

According to their website, Doglympics is a canine sporting event with the purpose of showcasing all aspects of the dog-human relationship in order to educate pet parents on the original purpose of their dog’s breed.  There were plenty of activities and demos to show all the various dog sports and jobs that dogs can do.  There were also kid activities, rescues, vendors, advocacy groups, and even a lure course.

I was all ready to try out lure coursing!  Unfortunately, when we found out the course was not in a fenced in area and was surrounded by four roads, Mom quickly vetoed my request.  She said it was something about me being a westie and how when I get excited about chasing something, I don’t want to come back when called.  She also said she wasn’t about to go looking for me all over Orlando because I ran off from the event.  This meant I had to observe from the sidelines.  I watched these terriers show off their chasing skills.  For the record, I’m pretty sure I could have done better if Mom had let me!

Here are a few snapshots from the day.

I met some new dogs friends, a few westie owners, and I got some great treats and new tennis ball.  So overall, I think the Doglympics was a lot of fun – even if I didn’t get to try the lure course this time!  To learn more about the Doglympics, go to:  http://www.doglympicsusa.com
