Wonder’s Story

Written by Rachel Phelps

My pals, it is time for the Iams Home 4 the Holidays 2012 campaign and our pals at the  Helen Woodward Animal Center shared with me a great story of pet adoption from their Most Heartwarming Story Contest.  Wonder’s sounds like one great dog and because of Animal Refuge Center.  He now has his perfect forever home!

Every Day is filled with Wonder

Wonder was brought to the Animal Refuge Center in N. Ft Myers Florida as a puppy with the most unique set of needs we have ever seen. He was found wandering in a field of tall grass with just the tip of his tail visible and going in circles with his nose in the air. This precious pup was born deaf and blind and therefore he was trying to find his way home by smell.

While his condition required very special training at ARC, it was not beyond our capabilities. Wonder began his education through “touch training”. He learned to sit when touched on his back end, lay down when touched between his shoulder blades and follow when touched on the tip of his nose. Wonder loves everyone and everything and lights up with joy whenever people or pets interact with him.

Wonder was the guest of honor at ARC’s largest fundraiser, the 2011 Starlight Auction, and it was there that a couple fell in love with him. They are currently fostering Wonder and learning along with him what has to be provided to each other to create a harmonious home environment.

Wonder has taught all of us many valuable lessons when it comes to a dog with sight and hearing deficiencies. It is rarely easy at the Animal Refuge Center because we welcome special needs pets. But it sure is rewarding to give every pet a chance at a happy ending.
