AKC Museum of the Dog

Written by Rachel Phelps

When I was in St. Louis this past fall for a pet event, I stopped by the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, for a tour. First of all, what is really neat about it is they are the only museum I know of that actually ALLOWS dogs to tour. Now, granted, I got a good talking to by the rents about how I must be on my best behavior, and absolutely NO marking the priceless pieces of art. I was like ok, ok, ok … lets go. The museum displays over 500 original paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, sculptures in bronze and porcelain, and a variety of decorative arts objects. There was about every breed I could think of there. But I was on a quest to find the westie paintings!

I found one painting of a dog named Millie that lived in the White House. I wonder how you get to live there…

They even had some really, really, old collars. You know those dogs had to be really tough to pull off wearing some of these!

Isn’t this a cool dog house!!

They even had a hall of fame … but I couldn’t find me in it anywhere … I think I need to complain!

Finally, … I found the westies!

Overall, the art was amazing! But I do admit, as a dog I kinda got bored. The rents just kept walking around slowly looking at the art and talking. I wanted to go do something. I think the Museum of the Dog should have chew sticks and toys in each exhibit hall just to keep us occupied. Also, it didn’t help that a dog club was having an event in their huge meeting room. Those dogs were coming and going and I wasn’t invited! I tried to crash the party twice, but the rents stopped me. Lucky for me, the nice lady at the front desk had a stash of dog treats, and she hooked me up several times with some yummy treats!

If you are ever in the St. Louis area, you need to set aside time to visit the AKC Museum of the Dog! For more information, go to: http://www.museumofthedog.org/index.html
