Elvis the Interview

Written by Rachel Phelps

Today after many requests from my press agent the elusive Elvis finally granted me permission for a candid interview about his very guarded private life. Enjoy:

Preston: Hi Elvis I’m Preston from Prestonspeaks.com and first I would like to say thank you for allowing me to sit down with you in your crate and talk. I know you have had a trouble past few years and our readers want to learn about you and how you overcame your struggles in the puppy mills.

Elvis: No problem Preston I have recently been catching up on your blog since we didn’t have Internet or computers at the mill. I have enjoyed your articles and I know you will portray my struggles in a positive light. So lets get started

Preston: So tell us about your early life.

Elvis: I was born and raised at a puppy mill in Mexico Missouri . I just turned four this past September. I don’t remember much about my early days other than spending a lot of time in a metal crate with my litter mates and my mom. Most of my siblings ended up in the pet stores in the St. Louis area. But I stayed behind to become a breeder dog. I had a lot of issues being separated from my family. I was forced to spend alot of time alone in a small wire crate.

Preston: From my research you had a pretty wild youth and young adult years. Share with us what that was like.

Elvis: Well, Preston I had a thing for the ladies and had a lot of very short term relationships with the other girls dogs at the mill. But it was encouraged by the humans since each litter born was money in the mill owners pocket. Honestly, the poor girl dogs were forced to have puppies back to back and that was so hard on them. Many got sick and didn’t receive proper vet care.

Preston: But prop B came along and things changed at the mill….

Elvis: Yes word got around about this new law that the citizens of Missouri was trying to pass. All us dogs were excited. It limited how many litters the girl dogs could have and how many dogs total a breeder could own. It also said we had to have access to vet care and the outside for proper exercise. About this time our mill owners decided to get out of the business. So a huge auction was going to be held. 800+ dogs were to to be sold and I was one of them.

Preston: Wow weren’t you worried about your fate being up on the auction block?

Elvis: Oh yes Preston, I was scared that I would be sold to another puppy mill with even worst conditions! Or even worst if no one bought me I would have been killed! But I have a group of angels looking out for me ..the Westie Alliance!

Preston: Elvis, my mommy was a part of that. We were so excited to help. The group arranged for all the westies (24) to be bought ahead of time. They got all of you all out of there. Alot of westie rescue groups step up to take in the dogs. I even helped with the transport. I went along with mom taking dogs from Indianapolis to Nashville.

Elvis: I was in your group!!! My name at the time was Farley. I got my name Elvis later on.

Preston: That is so cool! We have met before! So what happened after you got to Nashville?

Elvis: Well I was brought to Westie Rescue Southeast and I was taken to be fixed right away. So I didn’t lust after the girls anymore. It is actually good to not have those girls on my mind all the time hehehe. Then I ended up coming to live with your family Preston so I can learn to be a dog and a pet.

Preston: How is that going for you..learning to be a pet?

Elvis: It is hard. I have spent my whole life in a cage with no human interaction. I must learn everything! I still have to get those stairs figured out..I keep falling down them! I also had to learn about toys, moist food, belly rubs (those are the best!) and even what a cat is. I’m learning though. It is just going to take some time. But I’m excited to get my forever home soon!

Preston: That is great Elvis, I know you will make a great pet for that perfect forever family. Well that wraps up the questions I have for you. Do you have anything to add?

Elvis: Actually I do Preston. Everyone reading this please stop buying dogs from pet stores. You are just buying from puppy mills and that in turn means we are allowed to be treated so badly in the name of the bottom dollar. Take a stand so I can say i am the last puppy mill dog because of you!
