Purina Waggin’ Train Review and Giveaway – CLOSED

Written by Rachel Phelps

Dogs love chicken jerky!  Ok, dogs love about any kind of meat, but dried meat  – yum, yum, yum.  Recently, my pals at Purina told me they were re-launching their Waggin’ Train Jerky treats.  They sent me a full basket full to try out and I admit, I taste tested all three kinds! There is:

  • Waggin’ Train Smoked Jerky Snacks – These are made in the USA with real chicken, a hint of brown sugar, and no artificial flavors or preservatives.
  • Waggin’ Train Jerky Duos – These are also made in the USA, with real chicken and sweet potatoes, and no artificial flavors or preservatives.
  • Waggin’ Train Chicken Jerky Tenders – These treats are made in China using white meat. There are no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Ok humans, don’t freak out that I just said that one of the products is made in China.  I am sure you have heard some not so great things about chicken from China.  So being the good investigative reporter I am, I got Purina on a conference call and asked the tough questions I am sure you are thinking.

Why China?  The senior executive team of Waggin’ Train explained to me that in China, dark meat is more popular, so large quantities of high quality white meat is more readily available.  Because of this, they decided to use a supplier located in China to source their white chicken meat.  Even though this supplier has operations in China, they are a US based company.

How safe are the Chicken Jerky Tenders?  The Purina quality control manager told me that every single lot of treats they make are tested for Salmonella, Melamine, di-ethylene glycol, antibiotics, micro toxins, pesticides, and other stuff that isn’t good for us dogs.  Actually, they test for over forty-five antibiotics and over one hundred pesticides.  I am told that the tests done over in China are the exact same tests done on the other jerky treats at the US plants.  The plant in China meets all US requirements as if the plant was actually located in the United States.  Purina also has a US based team that lives in China (over twenty-five employees on site) that oversees the operations.  Purina also fully stands behind each and every bag of treats.

You have a choice with Waggin’ Train.  If you still don’t feel comfortable with products made in China, the other two jerky treats are made and sourced entirely in the United States at US plants.

Personally, I tried all three kinds of treats and gobbled them up.  My mom has a manufacturing background, and after learning about all the types of testing she felt comfortable giving me the Jerky Tenders.  However, that is a personal decision you and your rents must make.  Just don’t let the China issue stop you from trying the other two kinds of treats.  Trust me, they are yummy!

But I want you all to try them as well!  My pals at Waggin’ Train are giving YOU (well actually TWO of you) a chance to win two packages each of Chicken Jerky Tenders, Smoky Jerky Snacks, and Jerky Duos, and I’m throwing in an official PrestonSpeaks.com drawstring backpack too, just because I am an awesome dog.

Please note :   We are closing the comments for this post. Frankly we are tired of being insulted on our own website calling us irresponsible because our opinions differ than a very opinionated group against these treats. Yes there are lawsuits but no rulings and the FDA has not released this report they are referring to. There are options like I mentioned in the post for products made both in the US and China so pet parents make your own decision for yourselves on what is best for your pups. The rents personally feel comfortable feeding these products and I feel comfortable eating them. However, you may feel differently. But this is OUR site and we call the shots on what we post and we feel comfortable hosting a giveaway for these products and obviously from the many entries many pet parents feel the same way.

  • Seriously, you promote a product that the only research you have done was to talk to the executives of Purina! Maybe you should talk to some of the over 4600 victims, the ones who have been involved with this since 2011, maybe the plaintiffs in the lawsuits, maybe the ones who have done research? It is people like you that will cause the next round of victims, you are just as guilty!

    • Thank you for your comment. I spoke with Waggin’ Train directly and they assured me that their treats have always been safe to feed as directed. • Obviously Purina is going to say there garbage was safe – they are named in numerous lawsuits for the deaths and illnesses caused by Waggin Train and Canyon Creek Ranch jerky.
Who else have you asked? Hvae you asked the vets who treated the victims? Have you asked the vets and scientists at VIN that have been studying the jerky and necropsies? YES – NECROPSIES!
Clearly you didn’t put any true research into this – you simply promoted some garbage that Purina sent you… some promotion that is! Shame on you! Preston Speaks (with a forked tongue).

        • PS… I spoke DIRECTLY with Purina too.
And hundreds of victims. AND directly with the FDA. I choose my sources over yours.
If you are truly gullible enough to believe what Nestle Purina – again, defendants in several lawsuits, including a Class Action suit that the judge REFUSED to dismiss – then you truly should not be making recommendations to the general public.
I see no reputable bloggers or journalists or vets saying jerky from China is ‘safe’.
          Geeeez.

          • Please do not insult us on our own website calling us irresponsible or not reputable especially if our opinion differs than yours after we investigated your claims for ourselves. Also the relaunched product has not been proven unsafe either, these class action suits are still in the court system.

      • Please don’t believe Purina. My 4 year old yorkie passed from Renal Failure due to these treats in April 2012. She was never feed more than recommended- In fact she received less. Of 5 dogs she was the only 1 who ate the treats! 3 of my other dogs are related to her Mom and Sisters. Renal failure does not exist in her lineage! Please do your research and don’t just believe the reps. It is their job to sell product- Not prevent illness and death.

  • Sad that people will have to learn the hard way.
I won’t be fooled again. You can keep & choke on the lies & toxic Chinese chicken.

  • At least if you were going to report a story you should have been responsible and reported both sides, so your “readers” could make an educated choice! Deleting my comments on twitter and not allowing a comment on your irresponsible blog is really not trustworthy reporting!

    • Robin,

All comments I personally approve before they are posted on my website and I’m not on the computer all day to approve them the second someone responds. I reported the whole story that Purina relaunched a treat line. Relaunch means that these treats are not the same ones that were on the shelves years ago. I covered and disclosed where all the ingredients were sourced and I discussed the brand’s response to the China concerns. However, there is no evidence that these relaunched treats are in any way connected to the recall from years past. Here at PrestonSpeaks.com we feel that pet parents can make the decisions for their pets that is best for their family. Like I stated in my post there are TWO other products produced completely in the US or if you so choose don’t purchase any of the treats. If you are concerned about this product we strongly encourage you to contact Purina directly at 1-866-283-2923.

  • These treats almost killed my dog. I dare you to feed one to your kids!! if it’s not for human consumption why should it be ok to feed your dog who has less tolerance to food.

  • “Good investigative reporter”? You can’t be serious. What did you investigate? You spoke with Putina’s PR people. They’re using the same company in China they used before. The same deadly chicken. The whole “Chinese prefer dark meat” ploy is a crock. A billion starving rural people aren’t that picky. Why don’t you do some actual investigative reporting and learn the truth? You’ve been had by Purina and their PR machine.

  • If the treats have always been safe why were they finally pulled off the shelves? Illegal antibiotics? People please do your research before you feed these to your pet

    • Again I will state this is a relauch of a product. Not the same products that were on the shelves several years ago. • Artie and Kouga would like the Waggin’ Train Smoked Jerky Snacks because they love jerky treats. They love my homemade turkey treats too.

  • My dogs would like the Waggin’ Train Smoked Jerky Snacks and the Jerky Duos. They love potatoes of any kind.

be the Waggin Train Chicken Jerky Tenders.

  • My baby boy would love all of them but he’d probably like the smoked jerky the most!
