One of my Favorite Things (Kinda)

I Love Feeling Clean!

Hello my pals. Now you know me, I am not a huge fan of baths, but I do like feeling clean. I love doing zoomies to dry off and I LOVE all the compliments afterwards. After all, you want to smell nice for all those other dogs you are going to meet when you go for walks and training lessons. I also really want to smell nice for my beautiful friends Bella and Carma.

I have learned a lot from being on the receiving end of this water torture called a bath. First of all, your human needs to get the right kind of shampoo based on the type of skin you have and the reason they are bathing you in the first place. Did you roll in something wonderful (oops, I mean nasty) or do you just need freshening up a little bit to not smell so doggy? One of my favorite shampoos is PawGanics foaming shampoo; it makes your coat feel wonderful. Tell your family that they can get it and other pet meds online.

Another big no no is that our humans must never use shampoo that is designed for humans, as our skin is different than theirs. Also, for the sanity of your dog, do not, and I repeat, do not, give us a bath everyday like you humans do! For the love of dog! That is way too much. The experts say it should be no more than once a week, max. If we need more, it must be because we have gotten really bad skin, so listen to what the vets says. Where we are bathed is also very important. Whether it is in a tub in the backyard, in the sink, or in your Mommy and Daddy’s bathtub, the water temperature has to be right, not too hot, and not too cold. For the record, you humans who bath us with the garden hose … have you ever noticed how cold that water is!?!?!? Take us inside and give us some warm water please!

Once your coat and skin are wet and whoever is bathing you puts the shampoo on, make sure that it gets really foamy, so that your coat and skin are thoroughly clean. Remind them to not get any water or soap in your eyes and ears, as this may be irritating for you. Many of the soaps my owners have used have had to be left on for ten minutes – this is a good time to plot your revenge on how to strategically shake to soak the rents … hehehehe. When your time is up, make sure the person bathing you rinses you until all the soap comes off and you are “squeaky” clean; yes, your lovely clean coat will be bright white. Ok, I know not all dogs have white fur, but I am only talking from personal experience … after a bath my fur is always white! 🙂

Now the fun really starts with a vigorous towel rub, this is the best part! I like to go after the towel and play tug of war! If you are really lucky (well if you like the sound of the hairdryer … I don’t so I skip this part) they will plug the hairdryer in and you get to sit there and be pampered. Regardless, tell them to brush your coat as it is drying, otherwise you could end up with a tangled mess and a real bad fur day. Like I said, if your Mommy and Daddy bathe you properly, and with the right shampoo, then bath time isn’t so terribly bad.

  • (Paw clapping) Great post Preston. Being a white dog ,myself, you know it is difficult for us to stay clean. Brushing everyday does help between baths. I really love my baths. To me, its poodle spa day. The massage to put the soap on my coat, scrubbing in between the toes and the back rub. Oh boy it makes me want a bath now. I will tell my ma about that shampoo and maybe she will buy some.
I love the blow dryer. But I have to say that towel dry is the funniest because it turns in to a game of tug a war too. Sometimes my ma plays peek a boo kiss. Covers my face with the towel and says PEEK A BOO then kisses my nose. She sings to me too “Gonna wash that dirt right out of my hair, gonna get me nice and clean….”
    Your coat always looks wonderful.
    Love,
    Carma

  • I love to do the zoomies after a bath too! Wheeee! You look funny wet, pal! hee hee!
    Your pal,
    Cosmo Havanese

    • Cosmo,

Yes I know I have rather large ears hehehehe 🙂 but I bet you look like a mop when your wet 😛

  • We look like drowned rats when we are wet. LadyBug does not like the hairdryer. Chloe loves the dryer. In fact, when it snows, she will run upstairs and lie down on the bathroom rug and wait for her blowdry! She totally loves it!! Great post!!
