Could I Be Best In Show?

Written by Rachel Phelps

Last fall my rents went to a AKC dog show which was held in our local town. I was all excited to go but then was told only dogs entered in the show can attend. So I was like sign me up, I will be in a dog show. I can walk, look handsome, and accept a ribbon such as best in show, hehehehe. Then mom had to break the bad news to me that I can’t be in a dog show either. I had some puppy making organs removed that you have to have to be a champion. However, even though I couldn’t go, I questioned mom when she returned. She also took tons of photos so I wouldn’t feel like I missed out on anything. There was only one Westie in the ENTIRE show and he showed earlier in the morning. So instead, mom watched the Bichons Frises (they are also white dogs … and I have a friend Tyler who is that breed).

What I learned is they spend a lot of time getting their hair done, redone, and fixed again! Then they go into their kennel to wait until it is their turn to walk in the ring. When they get in the ring, then prance around letting everyone know THEY are the best, and finally get their awards.

I also bet when they have to go do their business they aren’t allowed to run in any mud either … hehehe. Another thing I learned is that the handlers “bait” the dog by putting OUR dog treats in THEIR mouths! They say it is so we pay attention to them. I guess it works because I know I would be looking at them thinking … hey there, don’t eat my treats!

The less high maintenance dogs hang out outside and they show in outdoor rings. They are actually allowed to lay in the grass….gasp!

Another neat thing about dog shows is there are many vendors there. Mom likes that alot … shopping!! Since I wear a belly band alot, and those are common for the show dogs, Mom picked up some new ones. She got one with blue flames on it for me. I think it makes me look like a rocker dog hehehe. Mom also bought me more whitening shampoo so I can be as white as a piece of chalk for when I have my photos taken. Finally, she got something fun for Elvis and I too. A HUGE tennis ball! It is bigger than me, but it is a blast to chase!

Mom says the local dog show was very interesting to watch because the dogs are all so beautiful and the show people are very friendly. So if a dog show is ever in your neck of the woods go check it out!

  • A wonderful report, Preston. Tell your mum that you need a little brother or sister since I seem to recall she was a natural in a show ring!
