Crate Time!

Written by Rachel Phelps

Hi my pals! I know some of you humans don’t like to crate your dog but I have to say I love my crate! When I see my rents take down my crate it means we’re going on a trip! As you know from my blog traveling is one of my favorite things. I’ve been to St. Louis, Nashville, Washington DC, San Francisco and I spent my birthday in a Smokey Mountains cabin. My crate came with me! Sometimes I also go in my crate at home when my mom and daddy can’t watch out for me or just need a break from me (just kidding). I also stay in my crate when they are gone to work. It’s important that I’m in a safe, warm place with my bed until they can get back to take care of me and my brother Elvis (he has a crate too..his is actually the living room end table. So I joke he is in the furniture! He doesn’t think it is very funny!)

My crate is a smaller wire one, with a door on a latch, and mom puts my bed in the bottom. Some dog cages are bigger because they need to be able to fit Great Danes or Labradors. My great dame pal Zander crate is huge and takes up half a room! But I don’t need that much space. I was first shown my crate when I was very small, when Mommy was teaching me the rules of the house. The crate also helped me with house training since I obviously don’t want to have an accident in my crate. She put my favourite treats and toys inside and showed me that it was a safe place where I wouldn’t have to stay for too long. One of the most important things about my crate is that I must never go potty inside of it. It’s not fun to be stuck in a crate with a wet bed!

The thing I like best about my crate is that it’s all mine and no one else’s, not Elvis, or Charlie’s!. Ok I admit Ashes my brother cat does sleep in there sometimes, but what can you do..he is a cat. . Even though Mom used it when I was smaller to teach me the rules of the house, I still think of it as my westie safe haven

Crate time usually means sleep and rest time,so barking, whining or scratching is not allowed. If I do these things , Mom doesn’t let me out. In fact, she doesn’t acknowledge my Westie “speak” at all. And if I’m really bad she puts a blanket over the front of the crate so I can’t see out until I calm down. But I know she’ll never make me stay inside there for long! As soon as I can convince them to open the door it is play time again!

Your Pal,
