Dog Surf-A-Thon (Giveaway) – CLOSED

Written by Rachel Phelps

First, for the record I am so jealous of you California dogs that get to surf! But this Sunday is the coolest event for one of the very best forward thinking animal rescue centers in the United States. This Sunday at Dog Beach in Del Mar is the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon presented by Eukanuba. For you dogs not so up on geography that is California (San Diego) hehehe. It runs from 8 am to 2 pm and includes a 9/11 tribute to police and search and rescue dogs. There will be more than 80 dogs surfing to raise money and awareness for orphaned pets in the southern California area. For the dogs who don’t like to surf that much there will also really neat events/contests such as Beach Bum Bikini Babe Canine Costume Contest; Doo the Dah, where people and pets in costume surf together to raise funds for Helen Woodward Animal Center and more than 70 vendor booths. They are even inducting the first dog into the HWAC Surf Dog Hall of Fame.

Personally, I don’t think I would do good surfing, where could I practice? Not like the Ohio River has waves! But if you live anywhere in southern California you MUST GO and take photos for me, especially if there are any westies! Here is the link for you west coast dogs– www.surfdog.kintera.org or call 858-756-4117.

  • Hi Preston! My favorite memory of Pepper in the water is her first swimming lesson in her new life jacket (Ruffwear). She isn’t a natural. LOL. lots of frantic splashing and she tried to climb on me instead of the steps. I hope to video her next lesson, whenever that may be.

  • Love taking my 2 chocolate labs swimming! They get so excited! The best was the other year we took them to the beach to swim in the ocean!

  • We lived in AR when Romeo was a pup and he loved the streams. We had doggie pool day at the end of the summer at our pool and I let him in the big pool and he just sank..put him in the kiddie pool where he could stand up and he quickly became the life of the party..Have pool day Sept 11…will have to send you some pics Preston.

  • My favorite dog and water memory was when we went to our first doggie pool party. Kouga had some much fun running and chasing the other dogs in the pool. Now, we go to these local fundraisers every year.

  • My favorite memory of my dog in the water is the first time she actually went in the water. She went in after my FIL’s dog and it was hilarious. She wasn’t sure how to swim and was splashing all about. I was worried I would have to jump in but she made it out and finally learned how to swim!

  • My favorite memory is when my dog was saved from drowning. I was away on business in Florida (I lived in North Carolina at the time). My German Shepherd/Malamute decided he wanted to jump over our seating bench that overlooked the lake (the rest of the yard was fenced in) and take a swim. Only problem is he had lower back issues and the jump didn’t do him any good…his mobility was going in his back legs. Apparently he started sliding towards the water vs. running and being in control. He fell in. I got a call from my roommate. He was in the water trying to get this 135 lbs German Shepherd/Malamute out of the water, but it wasn’t working. I told him to call 911 so animal control could come help. He did. Well a very compassionate Sheriff deputy heard the call and was in the area. She immediately came by the house and started looking around the lake and found them. She grabbed a tarp from our garage, tied a rope to the end of it and helped my roommate position my dog in the tarp. She then tied the other end to her police cruiser and slowly backed up bringing my dog with her. He was saved. They had been in the water for at least half an hour…cold, soaking wet but happy to be out of the water! The story could have ended badly but with the help of our Sheriff deputy who went ABOVE and BEYOND her call of duty, she saved my dog. Needless to say, my dog never jumped that bench again.

  • I am a poodle that has never been in water other then baths. First time ma put me in the pool I freaked out! I was splashing and grunting and was in total panic. Ma was trying to get me to calm down and even though I was clawing her to the point that she had blood running down her shoulder, she finally got a hold of me and held me tightly. She talked to me in a calm voice telling me she had me and I would be ok. She held me up against her with me facing away from her. She held me securely and just kept talking to me. She let me sit on her lap while she just sat there. I finally calmed down and I just softly paddled at the water. After I was calm she told me to put my back feet down. She moved her legs so that mine would go down and once again I freaked out. she kept talking softly to me telling me it would be alright and she would take care of me. I put my legs down and felt the bottom of the pool. I could stand up! I still can’t swim but I love to get in the pool with my ma. As long as she holds me I am fine. We have had a lot of fun this summer in our pool! As longs as my mama holds me.
I follow your Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Heck I will follow you around at the doggy socials BOL!
    Good luck to everyone!!!

  • Robert I just want to say I am so glad your story had a happy ending! I am happy that your room mate was keeping a eye on your fur kid and paws up for the Sheriff Deputy that came to the rescue. It was her quick thinking that saved your dogs life.

  • so you’re from owensboro,,,anywhere close to paducah? my mom is from there. my name is arnold. i’m an old english bulldogge, who loves getting my feet wet and drinking water from the garden hose! my stepsister, zoey, a beagle/schnauzer mix, jumped once into the hot tub,,,jumped right back out,,,,well, it’s a long story,,,let’s just say she wasn’t expecting to get soaked! thank you!!

    • Marjorie,

Owensboro is about an hour and half away..not to long of a drive. Hi Arnold..I like to get my feet wet too..mom actually got us doggies a kiddie pool to play in then we get to play with the water hose when she is filling it up too. It is alot of fun!!!

  • My puppy hasn’t been around the water that much yet. But he does love his little pool in the back yard. I fill it up with water when it’s hot out and he’ll run around the fence and thru the pool a million times. Then he just lays in enjoying the cool. But soon he’s going to be a fishing dog and spend lots of time on a boat in the water.

  • My favorite story about Bella and water is the first time I took her to the Morris Park near where I live. Bella was just a few months old, and I had her on the walking track on a retractable leash. The track goes around a large fishing pond, and at some points, the track is less than 3 ft from the water. It was a hot day, around 90 degrees+, and as we walked, Bella walked up to the pond. I thought she was thirsty, and at first, she did get a drink. Then, as casually as could be, she walked into the water, biting at it as she went in. She go about neck deep, swam for a couple strokes, and then just waded in the water as I walked on the track. I really regreted not bringing my camera for that!
