Meet Baxter

Written by Rachel Phelps

A few weeks ago a new West Highland White Terrier came into our lives..Baxter.  Through Westie Rescue Southeast  Don’t worry Elvis is still in the house!    Baxter actually came from Owensboro too so he is a local dog.   He is 11 years old and has some health issues.  He is an owner surrender.  His mom is an older lady who had to go into an assisted living community so her kids found WRSE to take over Baxter’s care.  They got in touch with mommy and a few weeks later in comes Baxter through my front door.  So now there are three crazy and wild Westies ruling the house!

Baxter even though he had a great mommy has had a rough couple of years.  His mom over indulged Baxter and he ate, and ate, and ate.  At his peak weight he was 37 pounds!  To put that in perspective I only weigh 18 pounds.  He also had very bad allergies and lost most of his hair.  So his mom decided the best thing to do is to let him live at a local vet for a while and through medication, special food, and exercise the vet was able to get 15 pounds off.  He is now a healthy 22 pounds and his hair is growing back in.  But due to the weight he does have heart and thyroid problems.  He takes medication every day and is doing well. He also has some kidney stones that they are monitoring. We are keeping our paws crossed that they will pass soon.

Since he is a senior dog unfortunately he doesn’t like to do zoomies with Elvis and I.  But every now and then we will see a fast waddle from him.  He loves to chew on chew sticks and lay beside mommy to get his belly rubbed.

Baxter is looking for a loving caring family who understands seniors and their special needs.  He may not be up for a big game of fetch and frisbees but he loves to be near you and is a great couch/lap dog.
