Why Preston is a True Hero to Me!

Written by Rachel Phelps

Mom entered a contest about why her dog is a hero. She didn’t make the finals or win but I thought I would share the kind words she said about me. But this entry could go for any of the dog foster brothers and sisters out there. So you doggie pals are my true heroes!

My little white dog Preston Peabody or (double P) as his westie friends call him is our true hero. He may be small, kinda spoiled, and can’t jump buildings in a single bound but he has more love and compassion than any other dog I have ever met. We recently started fostering westies through Westie Rescuse Southeast and we really debated on how it would affect Preston. Preston is almost two years old and has ever been an “only dog. ” He loved being the center of our world. But when we brought the first dog home Dancer, Preston welcomed him into our home with open paws. They played and Preston showed him around the place, where the water dish was, where the toys are kept etc. After a couple of days Dancer went on to his forever home and Preston was back to being an only dog. So we thought lets try fostering again. This time we got a very shy little westie named Tommy. Tommy was rescued from a kill shelter just days before his time was up. He was malnurished, had terrible skin and fur, and had many broken teeth. This dog had led a rough life before he met us. So when Preston met him needless to say Tommy really didn’t know what was going on. Preston was so patient with him and didn’t get upset when Tommy took his toys, sat in his spot during movie night, or even slept on his parents bed when Tommy had nighmares while he spent the time in his crate. Preston taught him how to play and how great chew sticks were. He showed him that pets go outside to do their business, and even shared with him the doggie joy of marking fire hydrants! Preston and Tommy became quite the pair and went everywhere together. Through big brother’s guidance Tommy became a wonderful pet and is now in his forever home in Nashville.

Usually the humans get the “good jobs” when a foster dog is transformed into a pet but many people forget that it is the pet foster brother and sisters who deserve the pats on the back or in their case a belly rub. They open their home, their toys, their beds, and their parents to another dog. They teach these dogs proper socialization rules and are just patient with them as they make doggie mistakes.

Preston is on to his next foster dog project. His new brother Elvis is a puppy mill dog who has spent his whole life in a metal crate. So he has his hands full being a good big brother and teaching him everything.

Preston is a true hero in our eyes
