Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips

Written by Rachel Phelps

I can’t wait until Thanksgiving day! I get to go to my great grandmother’s house. They have a big meal and I get to play with the other dogs in the family in her fenced in backyard. My favorite Thanksgiving relative Tiffany also gave me turkey last year! All I can say is oh my LAND..TURKEY, TURKEY, TURKEY!!! I have already been practicing my sad face to try to get her to hook me up again with the wonderful meat!

However, around the holidays you have to take some precautions with us doggies to make sure we have a fun filled day with the family.

  1. Turkey — If you decide to give your puppy turkey (which I highly suggest you do..BOL) make sure it is boneless and fully cooked. Raw turkey can have salmonella bacteria which can make us very sick.
  2.  Sage — a big no no. Alot of you humans put it in your turkey dressing and on the turkey to make it taste better. But beware that this spice as well as others contain essential oils which can cause gastrointestinal upset (in other words..don’t give it to us unless you want us to throw up in the middle of dinner).
  3.  No of the bread dough– I didn’t realize this but raw bread dough is very dangerous for us doggies. We eat it and then our body heat causes it to rise in our stomachs. As it expands it can make us sick, cause us abdominal pain, bloating, and may even cause us to have to have emergency surgery to remove it.
  4.  Too much food — Now you didn’t hear this from me since I don’t want to make all the dogs mad at me. But sometimes giving us too much thanksgiving dinner is not good for us as well. We aren’t use to such a rich meal. We could end up with an upset tummy, diarrhea, or even pancreatitus.

So with followng just a few safety tips you can have a great thanksgiving day meal with your four-legged pal! Now back to practicing my sad face…hehehehe
