Dogs Help Protect California Agriculture

Written by Rachel Phelps

Recently, my human was reading Dog Fancy about how the California’s department of agriculture uses our doggie noses to protect their products from unwanted pests.   Who knew that we could protect all the countries citrus products?!?!  The story featured a lab named Chelsea who sniffs thousands of packages at shipping terminals in Fresno County.   She is trained to smell citrus, mango, guava, stone fruit, and apple.  If she finds one of those she informs her owner and she gets treats!  What a great job for a dog..just using our noses and getting treats as payment…yum!  Recently, Chelsa found a package from India that had Asian psyllids attached that had a bacterial disease called Huanglongbig.  She was honored for her find in a special ceremony and got a basket of treats and toys.

So this story got me thinking..I have a good nose…I know where the treats are kept and I can smell out all the places I hide my chew bones.  Not to mention I am low to the ground so that has to be an advantage over a big lab.  Maybe I should look into being a sniffing dog. … on second thought going to work every day might get old..I’ll just stay with blogging
