Doggie dancing

Written by Rachel Phelps

I have taken up a new hobby once I think will impress the ladies with my smooth moves.  My trainer Amber has convinced my parents that I need to learn how to dance. Now I really have my doubts since why does a dog need to dance?!?!  Isn’t jumping through agility hoops, and circling three times before I lay down creative enough for you humans?!?!  But once Amber explained to me that dancing is really obedience set to music I decided  that I could do this!  This is actually a hard core sport with a  governing body called the WCFO which stands for the World Camine Freestyle Organization.   They even have competitions for us dogs to show off our stuff.   Here is the official definition for freestyle.

Musical Freestyle is a choreographed musical program performed by handlers and their dogs. The object of musical freestyle is to display the dog and handler in a creative, innovative and original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork, artistry, costuming, athleticism and style in interpreting the theme of the music. Heelwork-to-Music incorporates traditional dog obedience and the art of dressage with the inclusion of musical interpretation, dance elements, and costuming with an emphasis on non-standard obedience movements. Both Musical Freestyle and Heelwork-To-Music routines should create a visually exciting display which is enjoyable to watch and which is equally enjoyable to dogs and handlers executing the programs. Canine freestyle is a showcase that truly demonstrates the joys and fun of bonding with your pet.”

Here is also a clip of a dog performing on Britain’s got talent.  Gin didn’t win but got the finals.

Needless to say I have my work cutout for me!  Right now I’m learning backup, and looking to the left and to the right.  They have even picked out my song that I’m performing to MC Hammer—“Can’t Touch This”.   So now I need your help..where can I find doggie hammer pants? And yes I will record this for my blog so you all can see me in action!
