Happy 4th of July

Written by Rachel Phelps

First I wanted to wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July! This is a big day for us dogs! First our parents are usually home for at least part of the weekend just to hang out with us. Mine also likes to grill out (yum..the smell of meat on a grill…oh I wish I was taller to grab me one of those hamburgers off the grill!) and then those evil fireworks. I don’t understand why you humans like those things so much. They really hurt my ears!

But did you know that the 4th is also the one day of the year that the most doggies get lost or run away? It is the most terrifying day of the year for us American Dogs with all the loud noises and crazy people celebrating. Home again (the microchip company) recently sent us microchip dogs some tips on how to keep us safe this weekend if we stay at home. They suggest:

  • Find a safe and quiet room for us.
  • Cover the windows and do your best to dampen outside sounds.
  • Make sure we have plenty of fresh food and water.
  • Leave our favorite toys out, so we can play.
  • Before you leave for the celebrations, take us for a walk.
  • Turn the radio or television on at a low volume for distraction and comfort.
  • Remove anything you don’t want chewed, scratched, or damaged—anxiety draws out survival instincts in us, leaving your property at risk.

Finally, just talk to us doggies, hug us, and let us know it is ok that the noises won’t hurt us. Just warning mommy if I have an accident in the house today, it’s not my fault, blame it on the fireworks! J
