Summer Heat

Written by Rachel Phelps

The weather outside is getting warmer, and here in Kentucky it is just getting very hot! I love being outside but now that summer is here my parents need to make sure I don’t get too hot and have a heatstroke. Another great website (other than mine of course) is http://www.zootoo.com and they recently had an article on heatstroke. They mentioned not to leave us in cars because they get really hot and make us very sick. But they said us doggies could also get heatstroke from playing, taking a walk around the block, or even swimming on hot summer days. Our natural defense is to pant but sometimes that isn’t enough especially if we have really been playing, swimming, and running around. Lucky for us you can help prevent heat strokes by doing the following:

• Keep us inside on hot days. Spoil us and let us play in the nice air conditioning

• Give us water and always have it available. I have three water dishes just at my house so I can stay hydrated. Ok, ok, one of them is the cats but I still drink from it. Their water tastes better. Mommy also has a travel water bottle she takes with us on long walks too.

• Keep us well groomed. Our fur protects us from the sun and if we are matted then our hair traps in the heat and makes us even hotter.

• Make sure we are at a healthy weight. Just like you humans if we are overweight it is harder for us to go on walks and run around. Thus, making us pant more and is easier to overheat.

I love summer and all the fun things I get to do outside with my mommy and daddy but with these tips I can make sure I have safe fun.

Woof,

Preston
