Cat food ingredients and sourcing

Written by Rachel Phelps

Ok humans, I want you to close your eyes and imagine something.  Imagine that for every single meal, you ate the exact same thing day in and day out.  If this were the case, wouldn’t you want to make sure that what you eat is really good and safe for you?  My brother and sister cats (Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb) are very set in their ways and like to eat the same food day in and day out.  Mom tells me that this makes picking the right food for my cat siblings very important.

My Cat Food Research

Recently, my pals at Hills told me about their new Ideal Balance cat food.  So what did I do?  I did what any good dog does, I Googled it.  I found that this food provides NO corn, wheat, and soy and contains all natural ingredients. Most of their foods are also sourced here in the US with all meat and poultry coming from USDA-inspected facilities.

Lately, the pet food industry has had a lot of recalls on cat food so I didn’t want to recommend a food that would make Pepper and Pibb sick.  I would have to sleep with one eye open the rest of my life if that happened!  I learned that Hills conducts more than SIXTY quality checks on EVERY batch of food.  Also, every ingredient can be tracked by batch or ingredient, within twenty-four hours to its source.  Finally, more than ONE THOUSAND Salmonella tests are conducted on the food every single month.  They told me over and over again that as a plant and a company, they have absolutely zero tolerance for Salmonella at their plants.

Also, rest assured that their dry food plants are completely owned and operated in the United States.  Mom toured one of their dry food plants a few years ago and she said you have to suit up and go through many, many, decontamination steps just to take the tour.  Obviously they take safety very seriously.

My Cat Food Decision

So I took my findings to the cat jury (Pepper and Pibb) and presented my case as to why they should consider eating Hill’s Ideal Balance cat food.  I admit, they did that eye slit thing cats do with a slow wag of the tail.  Finally, after some sidebars discussions, they agreed that I did my homework and I wasn’t tricking them.  As a result, they decided they were open to trying the food.  So I added a bag of Hill’s Ideal Balance Natural Chicken & Brown Rice dry cat food to Mom’s shopping list.  To learn go to go Ideal Balance Cat food.
