Frankenweenie Movie Review

Written by Rachel Phelps

Yesterday, I sent Mom, Dad, and flat Preston, to an advanced screening of the new Frankenweenie movie from Disney.  Yes, fluffy pets were not allowed.  Also, no cameras or cell phones were allowed either so sadly I have no photos to share of flat Preston’s adventure.

Frankenweenie comes out on October 5th to a theatre near you.  We saw the 3D version and I have to say Disney out did themselves again with another great family movie.  Frankenweenie was made by Tim Burton as a feature length movie based on a short movie he made back in 1984.  Some of the voices include:  Martin Short, Martin Landau and Winona Ryder.   This movie is a black-and-white, stop-motion, animated film, that follows young Victor as he deals with the unexpected loss of his dog Sparky.  He tries to bring Sparky back to life so he can have his best K9 friend back.

The movie has many funny parts and the 3D was amazing!  We really felt like we were in the movie at times.

I don’t want to give away too much of the movie to my pals, but lets just say Sparky isn’t the only pet that comes back to life, and they aren’t all friendly.  Watch out for the cat in the movie because she is up to no good … but why would you expect anything different from a cat?!?!  hehehehe.

This movie also opens up the dialog with the human puppies (kids) about the passing of a pet and the sadness they will feel.  Fortunately, Tim Burton approaches the subject with great tact.  Right after Victor’s dog Sparky passed away, Victor says “I don’t want him in my heart, I want him here.”  Disney did a good job capturing the feelings of a child when their pet best friend passes away.  With my cat brother Ashes passing away last week, memories were still raw which probably made the movie more emotional for us than others in the theater.

The movie does have a few scary moments, especially at the end, but the kids in the theater didn’t seem afraid.  Parents, you know your humans puppies best.  You will have to decide if they are ready for a movie involving pets coming back to life and some being … well … monsters.

This is a great movie, with great storytelling, especially if you’re a Tim Burton fan.  It also provides some great discussion points for your family.  So, go check it out when it opens in Theaters October 5th.
