Recently, I was sent the The New York Times Bestseller, Through a Dog’s Eyes, written by Canine Assistants founder Jennifer Arnold to read and review. This book is being re-released in a paperback edition. The book includes stories from Arnold’s life and the lives of the dogs who were her greatest teachers, and provides convincing and compelling testimony to explain her choice and style of teaching for her canine assistants program. You may remember when we participated in Milkbones Bark it Furward program that promotion benefited her program. Here is the link to catch up: http://www.prestonspeaks.com/2010/12/07/bark-it-furward/.

First, the book is a small paperback so if you get distracted easily and don’t like to read much… good news…. we were able to read in one weekend while traveling. The book was set up logically with alot of stories about Jennifer’s dogs and dogs in her programs. Some of the chapters include: canine cognition, emotion, personality, language, grooming, and teaching styles. She even gave us an entertaining story/history of how dogs evolved.

Here are some of our favorite quotes:
“Your dogs deserve your respect, and giving him that respect is the only way to have a healthy, happy relationship”.

“Another positive trait possessed by dogs is the willingness to cooperate, usually in a manner that is immediately beneficial to others rather than oneself..the desire to make other happy is an inherent trait of canines.

“(dogs) are bright, loving, splendid creatures who deserve to be adored for exactly who and what they are: dogs. We know that we, as people, are responsible for the well-being for dogs– all dogs, not just our own”

Mom also learned alot of interesting facts including: that dogs see approximately five times better at night than humans do and a dog’s vision is 80/20. We also don’t have a very strong sense of taste so that is how we can eat some really gross stuff hehehehe.

We also read that the alpha dog training methods that are so popular right now relies on the human showing force and power to control the dog. But according to Ms. Arnold in the wild the alpha would not have to be aggressive — they are the leader. Any displays of dominance would be far more likely to undermine the authority of a true alpha wolf. A genuine leader does not have to behave in such a manner. So why do you think we need to act that way towards us dogs..we won’t respect you the next day!

Another interesting teaching method she discussed was choice teaching. Which makes perfect sense to my parents. Us dogs as well as you humans don’t want to be told what to do all the time. We want to make a choice to do something because we want to. So one of the main methods they use at Canine Assistance is the trainers give the dogs a choice and wait for the dogs to decide what it is in his best interest to do what is asked.

This book will change the way you view the relationship between dog and owner!

[…] want to. So one of the main methods they use at Canine Assistance is the trainer […]…

  • I love to read books that offer interesting information on dogs and this one sounds great. Through a Dog’s Eyes is a great title.

  • I want to win this book as it will help with my Mommy’s training. As a licensed dog in Loudoun County, I am quite experienced at training humans; however, I find supplemental materials such as this can greatly enhance my program. This book has been on my Amazon wish list for some time but I haven’t been able to save enough allowance to buy it myself; and Mommy has learned to hide her credit cards so that my sister Hanna won’t shop on-line.

  • I love any dog book..saw a lady that sells homeade doggie treats and stuff at the farmer’s market the other day selling an autographed copy but did not have the extra money to purchase…Hated that I did not just whip out the ole credit card…

  • Dottie and Bayliss would like this book… (Aunt Ali) has been reading a lot of books lately and likes the doggie story ones!!! If it’s that good I need it in my collectioN!

  • I would love to add this book to my collection! I read a lot and like the great feedback I have heard about this one in particular.

  • This book would help me get a better understanding of how to communicate with dogs we own and the ones we foster. It’s good to have insight from other sources.
