Pet Safe Halloween

Written by Rachel Phelps

It is almost Halloween time and I’m so excited! This is my second Halloween technically but last year I was sick with kennel cough so needless to say with all the medication I was out of it. So today I wanted to share some tips to make Halloween safe for us doggies

  1. No candy for dogs! No matter how much we beg, ask, cry, etc. don’t give us any (yes I can’t believe I’m typing that!) Chocolate is toxic to us but all the artificial sweeteners in other types of candy is bad for us too! My suggestion is you go out and buy some yummy dog treats to put in our bag..hint ..hint..hint!!!
  2. Watch those dogs! On Halloween night your door will probably open and close all night long as you pass out treats. But be extra careful that we don’t sneak out when your not looking.
  3. Make sure we are tagged! See 2 ….if we do sneak out we need a way to get home and making sure we have a collar and and ID tag is key to a safe return.
  4. Consider our feelings! Some dogs love guests, others not so much. So please take into account how we will do when all these strangers in odd costumes come up to our door. If we don’t like strangers, loud noises, or kids it might be a good idea to keep us up and away from the door for the evening.
  5. Keep us close to home. Some evil people use Halloween as a chance to torment us (especially black cats) so don’t let us run free that night and keep us safe and sound at home.
  6. Decorations. Make sure we are careful around those Jack O’Lanterns with open flames. Last thing we want is it to catch on fire!! Also, those neat glow sticks are pretty but if we get ahold of them and chew it up we are exposed to some nasty chemicals that could make us sick.
  7. Costumes — yes we look cute all dressed up but if we truly are not having fun in the costume don’t make us wear it. Take your pictures quickly and then get that thing off of us!
  8. Finally Have Fun — Halloween is a fun holiday so don’t stress over us. Let us participate in the family traditions!
