Rabies is still a threat!

Written by Rachel Phelps

Recently it was world rabies day (9/28). Ok I know I’m so late! I’ve been busy with my new foster brothers..so cut me some slack hehehe.   This day was created back in 2007 to raise awareness that Rabies is still around and still a large problem through out the world.  The stats say only 2 people a year die because of rabies in the US but worldwide over 55,000 are afflicted.   I get my shot every year (ouch) as does my cat brother and sisters. Here in Kentucky it is the law that we must get the shot or our parents can get in big trouble and the po-po will come take them away.  Most dogs that have  rabies catch it when they come in contact with wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. Even if a dog who gets his shots  faithfully and gets bit from one of these crazy animals they have to get their shots again to be on the safe side.  They also have to  go in quarantined for 45 days just to make sure they aren’t sick.  There is no cure for rabies once the signs of the illness shows. these signs are numbness, aggression, lethargy, vomiting, drooling, tremors, coma, and death (yuck).   World rabies day was created to create awareness for people to get these shots for their pets and to be careful around wildlife.  For more information go to go get those shots and I’ll even hold your dogs paw if he is afraid of needles.
