After I discovered a westie has won the ultimate title I was determined to find out more about this wonder dog so I did what any internet savy dog does and I googled it. I found an article from 1962 that talks about the event. Poodles were all the rage in the 60’s and I love this quote
But in the finals, the silver cup and purple and gold rosette were snatched away from the poodles by a dog as unfashionable as high-button shoes: Ch. Elfinbrook Simon, a stubby, 11½-in, 18-1b.
However, in the early 1960s, this Westie took the dog-owning world by storm and changed canine history. In 1961, Ch. Elfinbrook Simon, who was owned by Barbara Keenan, placed third in group at Westminster and went on to win Best in Show In l962. This canine pup increased Westie enthusiasm enormously and earned our breed a ranking near the top of the breed popularity charts, where we has remained ever since. So I owe a lot to Simon who put us Westies on the map!
In my doggie research I learned Simon was a westie through and through. When he won the terrier group, what did he do..he marked the number 1 sign of course!
