Recently, I wrote a blog about how to prevent us from staring fires now I want to talk about how to keep us safe from fires. To catch up check out Pet Safety Part 1. AKC says that fires affect over 500,000 pets annually. Just think how that affects us…we can be hurt, killed (gasp), our parents could get hurt, and we may lose our beds, crates, collars, leashes, and toys to a fire. So listen up you humans you MUST take care of us and do everything you can to protect us from these nasty fires.
AKC recommends:
–Keeping us near entrances when away from home. If the firefighters can see us as soon as they enter the house then they are more likely to be able to save us.
–Secure the youngsters. You know how puppies and kittens are..always into something. So please confine them away from fire-starting hazards. You can use gates and crates to do this.
–Consider using a fire monitoring service. If a fire starts what can we do..we don’t have opposable thumbs so opening a door or a window is impossible. So we are stuck inside until someone comes to save us. If you use monitored smoke detectors then the fire department can be contacted as soon as they go off. Thus, they can get to us that much faster.
–Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling – this is so important! These small “signs” go in your windows and alert emergency responders that there are pets inside and how many. My mommy has one on her front windows and one on the back door. She picked hers up up at the local pet store. However, one tip is to check them yearly..ours faded from the sun and you couldn’t read how many pets where there. AKC is also giving these out at their Responsible Pet Ownership days and their Meet the Breeds events.
So human we love you and trust you to keep us save so follow these tips for our sake!
