Did you know that according to the AKC over 1,000 home fires are started by us pets every year! Now don’t panic I’m not saying you have an four legged arsonist living among you with cute brown dog eyes! Us animals don’t know too much about fires and we start them sometimes accidentally. Heck even my sister Dr. Pepper caught her self on fire one time by accident. She walked right by a candle and singed the hair on her side. She was ok, just scared, but the house smelled like burnt hair for days. So here are some tips to prevent us from starting a fire by accident.
–Open Flames – we are curious about anything new, bright, and flickering so we will investigate appliances, candles, and even your fireplaces. So don’t leave a flame unattended.
–Remove Stove Knobs – you know us pets are very nosey (especially cats!)…it just in our genes..so make sure to remove them or protect them with covers before leaving. We may jump up trying to see if you left any food up there and hit one by accident.
-Flameless Candles or Wax Warmers – these are great alternatives to candles and much safer. Plus, if we knock them over worst-case we get wax everywhere.
-Water Bowls on Wooden Decks – this was a new one to me when I was reading the AKC’s website. Don’t leave glass water bowls outside on wooden decks. When the sun is filtered through the glass it can actually heat up and catch the deck on fire. They suggest you use steal or ceramic bowls instead.
So doggies be careful and stay safe!
