It Rained On My Parade :-(

Written by Rachel Phelps

Recently, I was invited by the St. Louis Scottish Terrier Rescue to come to St. Louis to attend the Missouri Tartan Days and walk in the festival parade with them. I was so excited! I went last year and got in a little trouble by deciding to roll in the mud so I was determined to redeem myself. St. Louis Scottie rescue is an amazing group of Scottish dogs and their humans who dedicate their lives to saving my terrier cousins. I also love visiting with my Scottie pals so I had even made plans to have a dog park social with them the day after the festival.

So Friday, I had Mom pack up all my stuff (and Elvis’s too … yep Mom insisted I take him) and as soon as Dad got home, we hit the road. I also brought some products to review including an awesome carrier! However, as we kept driving through rain and thunderstorm I started to get worried. I kept saying to myself that it just can’t rain tomorrow because I have to go to Tartan Days. I had a top secret surprise for the parade, and I just HAD to have a lot of people on the parade route!

When we got to our pet friendly hotel in St. Louis I went straight to bed … well after I put my PJ’s on.

When we woke up, it was still raining. Mom and Dad got ready and ate breakfast (they wouldn’t give us any sausage … no fair!). Finally, we were ready to go, so we put on our raincoats and headed to the festival. It was raining cats and dogs (I know, bad joke, but as a dog I had to use it!). The festival was a ghost town. We waited in the car for twenty minutes hoping the rain would let up, but it never did. Finally, it was almost time for the parade to start, so we got out in the rain and found the Scottie booth. All of us dogs were very wet, and someone (not me), smelled very doggie. After a couple of delays, they told us the parade must go on. We lined up in the rain for the parade and it was time for my surprise … even if it was raining. I put on my new Scottish kilt and tam (hat)! I was a true Scottish dog! My kilt was dark blue and green, the typical colors of the highlands in Scotland (get it … West Highland White Terriers!). So we marched in the rain through the festival and showed everyone that us little dogs are tough! +

The rest of the day was very wet and it rained off and on. There was so much mud everywhere, which looked like a lot of fun, but I was a good dog and didn’t roll in it like last year. I even had one of the best spots at the entire festival. I hung out at the Scottie booth in a travel carrier which was nice and warm. Elvis was a good dog too. He even made it in the St. Louis newspaper with a picture of him and our Dad! I personally think he was trying to steal my limelight. But I do admit, it is a great photo with the umbrella in the background. I can’t post the photo here due to the newspaper’s rules, but here is the link for you to check it out yourself. http://suburbanjournals.mycapture.com/mycapture/enlarge.asp?image=41275129&event=1452069&CategoryID=64766

It never really stopped raining the whole day, but I still had fun with my rents, my Scottie friends, and yes I’ll say it … even with Elvis. Unfortunately though, my playdate the next day at the dog park was canceled due to the mud. Oh well, that just gives me a really good reason to go back to St. Louis soon to have a make-up play date!
